Reed and Rory rumbled at the Ryder Cup in one of the most epic matches in history. Reed came out on top with his winning bag mostly made up of Callaway golf clubs. We’ve got a list of what’s in his bag so you can own some of the same sticks as a champion.
What’s in Reed’s Bag
Driver: Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 816D (9 degrees)
Tour players tested the construction of the Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 816D. The result was the driver’s signature feature: a Gravity Core.
The technology works by allowing players to change the club’s center of gravity depending on their impact location. Make the adjustment by aligning a weighted cylinder in an up or down position.
What makes it attractive to Reed and other pros is a significant gain in ball speed. Don’t purchase this one if you’re a beginner, though. The Big Bertha Alpha 816D is configured to benefit the most highly skilled golfers.
Fairway Wood: Callaway XR16 Pro (18 degrees)
There are two versions of Callaway XR16 fairway woods: the Standard and the Pro. Don’t get the two confused with one another.
Reed used an XR16 Pro fairway wood, which is a club with a smaller footprint, more fade-bias, and a lower-spinning, penetrating trajectory. The other version is the XR16 Standard. It’s much bigger and has a higher launch angle, more draw-bias, and more forgiveness.
If you’re more of casual golfer, then the Standard version is the best choice for you. The Pro is suited to higher swing players.
Hybrid: Callaway Apex (18 degrees)
The Callaway Apex hybrid has a tour-proven shape and trajectory suited for pros, scratch golfers and single-digit handicappers. The hybrid performs like the irons it’s designed to replace.
In case you didn’t know, many golfers get rid of their longer irons – particularly the 1 and two irons – and replace them with a hybrid golf club. That’s because the irons are difficult to get airborne and hit the ball consistently well.
The Apex is versatile because players can use it off the fairway, from the rough, or off the tee. But if you didn’t already know that, you need to go with something more entry-level.
Irons: Callaway X Forged ’13 (4), Callaway MB1 (5-PW)
Callaway received feedback from Tour players, one of which was Reed, to develop the X Forged ’13 irons. The information was useful for wedge guru Roger Cleveland, who in turn created an attractive iron set meant for pros and accomplished players.
It’s not hard to imagine why Reed would have the 4-iron in his bag. The club tends to give him easy elevation with a flat, high ball flight.
3balls carries the 2007 X Forged iron set, if you’re interested.
The other iron in Reed’s bag, the 5-PW, is only available to the pros. You won’t be able to get your hands on this one.
Wedges: Callaway Mack Daddy 2 (52-10 T-Grind, 56-11 T-Grind), Titleist Vokey SM6 Prototype (61 degrees)
The Callaway Mack Daddy 2 wedges deliver hot high spin shots to pro golfers who need it most. Their “Mack Daddy Grooves” create a killer short game, so Tour players had to have them.
Did you know that the 52-10 is a lower-lofted wedge designed to create less spin than the higher-lofted 56-11? It has a less aggressive 20-degree sidewall. On the other hand, the 56-11 has a 5-degree sidewall. It gives Reed the ability to hit the ball from a variety of different lies.
The other wedge used by Reed, the Titleist Vokey Spin Milled 6 wedge is a prototype delivered to the best players in the world by Bob Vokey. It must be quite the feeling to have something so very special in your bag!
Putter: Odyssey White Hot RX #2 (Length: 34 inches, Loft: 4 degrees)
The Odyssey White Hot RX #2 helped Odyssey become the brand that manufactures putters with the most wins on Tour. This club is a squared off heel-toe blade with a custom sight line made specifically for Reed.
What’s special about this club is its White Hot insert, a dual layer injected molded insert with a soft core. The feature gives Reed controlled speed on his shots while putting on the green.
Reed responded to McIlroy’s 55-foot birdie putt on the par-3 8th hole by sinking a long putt of his own and stealing the victory for himself. You can see him wavering his finger at McIlroy in the video below.
