Have you ever wondered why golfers yell “fore?” We’ll tell you the answer but before we do, let’s take a look at the definition.
Fore is an interjection to warn anyone standing or moving into the flight of a golf ball. Why don’t we as golfers don’t just yell, “Look out!” or “Incoming!”? It’s because fore has some history in golf.
Fore comes from the word “fore-caddie.” In the 1800s, golfers would employ an additional caddie to track where the golf ball landed. Often, they were positioned in the trajectory of the incoming golf ball. The golfer would yell “fore-caddie!” to warn the person so they would not be hit. Over time, fore-caddie was shortened to fore.
It should go without saying that it’s extremely important to yell fore if you have any belief your golf ball might hit someone. You can decide how loud and aggressive you yell – it might just depend on the relationship you have with the other person.
Your safety should be top priority. If anyone yells fore, you should heed their warning and protect yourself. Crouch down and cover your head with your hands. Do not look up in the sky for the ball. This is the worst thing you could do because you don’t know from which way the ball is coming.
It’s common to hear the word “fore” being shouted on the golf course. If you should hear this word, take prompt action and shield yourself.
