Have you heard of Golf Wang? You might think golfers created an offensive term to refer to their genitalia. But it isn’t what you think it is. So what does Golf Wang mean anyway?
Golf Wang is actually a clothing company started by rapper and music video director Tyler Gregory Okonma, better known by his stage name Tyler, the Creator.
Never heard of him? We’re not surprised.
Tyler, the Creator is leader and frontman of the LA hip-hop group Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA). The collective is composed of artists Domo Genesis, Early Sweatshirt, Frank Ocean, Hodgy Beats, Jasper Dolphin, Left Brain, Matt Martians, Mike G, Syd the Kyd and Taco Bennett. Known for their demonic and cynical lyrics, Tyler and his brand of brothers often rap about skateboarding, drugs, and worshiping the devil. They say the group just likes to mock religion, celebrities, social norms and public figures. It’s meant to be fictional and comedic.
As for the name Golf Wang, it’s a spoonerism of Wolf Gang.
You’ll be shocked to know that Golf Wang really has nothing to do with the game of golf. And the clothing line isn’t designed to be worn on a golf course. However, the pop culture influenced-collection does look a lot like sportswear from Loudmouth Golf. If you visit Golf Wang’s Instagram page, you’ll discover bright two-toned shoes, a T-shirt decorated in flames, polka dotted pants, and a red and white striped backpack.
Tyler has said golf is his least favorite sport. Perhaps this is why he decided to make fun of it in his sketch comedy television series called Loiter Squad. The show was produced for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block and featured a character named Thurnis Haley. Played by Tyler himself, Thurnis is a 53 year-old golfer who does nothing but play golf. He is shown playing golf, visiting a local golf store, and washing his golf clubs and balls at a laundromat. Thanks to Tyler, Golf Wang is now a hot clothing line for flaming hipsters and bored teenagers. But the use of the word “golf” in the brand name still leaves golfers confused. The only reason Tyler used Golf Wang as a brand name is because it sounds funny. Are you laughing yet?
